Manfred Mann by John Walker

"I attended University College London in the years 1964-1968 and went regularly to see Manfred Mann (and others) at The Marquee. The atmosphere was exactly what you describe: a dense fog of smoke and about 1,000 people packed into a space big enough for 500.

I recall two regular "sideshows" at a Manfred Mann night. Eric Burdon of The Animals went to school with Manfred and would often show up on his own to sing with the Manfred Mann group, doubling the value of the ticket. One of The Marquee's other regular performers, whose name I shall omit, would often show up on but just to hang around the bar at the back picking up gullible women."
