The Marquee Club - A tribute site dedicated to the history of the legendary Marquee club at London's 90 Wardour street.

Gary Murphy of Mike Stuart Span, 2006

"The atmosphere was always fantastic, if not somewhat daunting, considering most of the top bands of the time had played there, we were certainly very conscious of this as we took to the stage. Despite that the audience were always receptive to new acts like us ? thank God!

Memories of the club itself are not being that large, a bit grubby, and the dressing room (if you can call it that) small and full of graffiti! John Gee of course being a very memorable character, and always insisting on using his own ?gold? microphone!

His usual patter when announcing us was to say ?and here are 4 very nice boys from Brighton where I?ve spent many a ?gay? weekend? (much to our embarrassment) and quite a bold statement to make in those days.

Mike Stuart has also confirms that after the group split, John Gee did ask if he would be interested in being manager of the club, but having thought about it and worked out the travelling costs involved, decided against it. As it happened not long afterwards he was given a contract with BBC Radio Brighton, and later became a producer with Radio 2.", 2006
