22-december-1975 Brand X

DATE: Monday, 22nd, Decembery, 1975
LOCATION: 90 Wardour Street
BAND MEMBERS: Robin Lumley (keyboards), John Goodsall (guitar), Percy Jones (bass), Jack Lancaster (winds), Phil Collins (drums)

Brand X debuted at the Marquee club on the 22nd of December, 1975. This was the first of six appereances of the jazz rock band at the club between 1975 and 1977. This was not the first time that some of the members of the band played at the Marquee though. Jack Lancaster had performed with his former band Blodwyn Pig in 1976, Phil Collins played at the Marquee in numerous occasions with Genesis and he even had worked before sweeping up the club.

Memories on this night

"I remember the debut of Brand X and oddly enough the Marquee wasn't as packed as one could have expected but of course now everything is viewed in retrospective and is hard to believe that a band like Brand X introduced themselves to 300 hundred people. The set was impressive and the music despite being heard for the first time was heavenly. I guess they played stuff from "Unhortodox Behaviour". Goodsall was fantastic and the drumming of Collins was extraordinary. Not to mention the bass player which played on Nova"s first album produced by Pete Townshend "Blink"; another act I saw a couple of times at the great Marquee.

A few months later, actually in July I think I saw again Brand X playing at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. They played a short set in the gardens not in the big hall. It was a free concert in the afternoon but Phil Collins was not there."
