The legendary supergroup Cream played their first gig at the Marquee on the 16th of August, 1966, announced on the newspapers as "The Cream". Before this show, they had also played the second concert of their career at the 6th National Jazz and Blues Festival of 1966 celebrated at Windsor in July, which was organized by the National Jazz Federation and the Marquee club.

This was not the first night that Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker played at the club since the three of the had played extensively before with their respective bands, including the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Manfred Mann, Graham Bond Organisation and Blues Incorporated, playing a very important roll in the history of the club.
